When leadership teams face immense pressure and conflicting priorities, finding effective ways to manage stress, improve communication, and drive performance is critical.  We worked with senior leaders from a major public sector organisation, to enhance their leadership effectiveness and resilience under pressure.

Situation

We were approached by a leading national law enforcement agency to design and deliver a series of leadership development workshops for senior operational leaders and staff. The goal was to equip these leaders with high-performance leadership techniques to better manage pressure, navigate critical moments, and improve their leadership performance.

At the time, many of the senior leaders felt overwhelmed, stressed, and under-resourced, struggling with both top-down and peer feedback. Their confidence was low, and they often felt unsupported. All of this was happening while operational pressures were mounting, alongside increasing political and public expectations for reform, which created a significant need for leadership resilience and effective leadership communication.

Action

We delivered five interactive, fast-paced workshops, each with 12-18 participants. These workshops balanced teaching and practicing high-performance leadership techniques in a Deepsky lab during the mornings, followed by real-world simulations in the afternoon to bring these tools to life.

Participants were taught critical breathing techniques to regulate their emotional states, alongside insights into acute and chronic pressure and how these factors impact performance. We helped the leaders identify individual and team strategies for shifting moods positively, focusing on resilience and leading under pressure.

We also focused on building rapport, active listening, and effective communication, using real-world examples to highlight the cause and effect of decisions made under stress. The use of role-playing and improvisation introduced a fun and engaging element, breaking the traditional mold of executive coaching workshops.

In the afternoon, the group entered Deepsky simulation mode. Leaders collaborated to develop solutions to their real-world challenges, using tools like FRAME. These peer-led, co-created solutions were reviewed and improved through live rehearsals, supported by both feedback and coaching.

Impact

The results were transformative, and the feedback from participants highlighted the program’s profound impact:

  • First-Time Learning: It was the first time senior leaders had been gathered in a room to learn and practice high-performance techniques together in a safe, supportive environment. This was a game-changer for their personal development.
  • Trust and Collaboration: For the first time, leaders felt safe enough to share their challenges openly. This built trust among participants and allowed them to co-create solutions in real-time, significantly accelerating their leadership effectiveness.
  • Power of One: Each attendee left the session identifying one high-performance practice—a tool or technique—that would make a lasting impact on their leadership mindset and performance under pressure.
  • Ongoing Learning: Many expressed the desire for more time to share challenges, collaborate, and continue practicing their techniques. The sessions sparked a genuine hunger for continued growth and improvement in leadership resilience and business success.
  • Unique and Powerful Experience: Attendees described the session as unlike anything they had experienced before. The combination of our backgrounds, our honest approach, and the fun atmosphere created an environment where they could learn constructively and apply new techniques immediately under pressure.

The workshop wasn’t just a learning opportunity but a turning point for these leaders. By the end of the day, they were more confident, equipped with the tools to manage high-pressure moments, and deeply committed to improving their leadership performance.
